Instruction Party Wall and Neighbourly Work
Property Spitalfields Market and Bishop’s Square
We were instructed to agree party wall awards with numerous neighbours surrounding the prestigious development of Bishop’s Square in London. The development involved the demolition and replacement of
the 1928 section of Spitalfields market with a modern, glass-clad steel structure, designed by Foster and Partners. The 1887 section of the historic market building was retained, mixing old with new.
We recorded in excess of 50 schedules of condition of the neighbouring properties with both commercial and residential occupiers. Subsequent to the demolition and piling works Malcolm Hollis agreed the scope of repair works to a small number of the adjoining properties that had been damaged. In some instances monetary settlements were calculated, in
others,Sir Robert McAlpine, the main contractor, undertook the repairs.
Our involvement in the development spanned over five years, from our instruction in 2001 to May 2006. Given the
sheer number of adjoining owners, the nature of the works involved and some tricky complications to sort out along the way, our hands-on approach ensured that the issues that arose were dealt with pro-actively, achieving the best solution for all parties.
